DeMatha Coach Elijah Brooks Breaks Down WCAC Semifinal Win over Gonzaga

Screen shot 2014-11-17 at 11.40.04 AMBefore we look ahead to the WCAC Championship Game Saturday at Byrd Stadium between DeMatha and Good Counsel, let’s take one look back at the great team effort the Stags produced last week in a 21-14 come-from-behind win over Gonzaga. DeMatha head coach Elijah Brooks talked with IDFB and broke down how his Stags fought their way to the big win:

Our team showed a lot of fight and determination. Gonzaga came out and executed very well in the first half. Outside of a fantastic punt return touchdown by DJ Turner, we didn’t have much to be excited about. At halftime we didn’t panic, but explained that this is where DeMatha teams come together and find a way to make one more play than our opponents. In the second half our defense was phenomenal, not allowing a score, just as they did in the regular season match up against Gonzaga. Offensively our execution was much better. A huge touchdown strike to Tino Ellis from Beau English and a more consistent run game proved to be the difference in the game. I’m so proud of this team and the grit they have shown to get to this point. They have grown up in a hurry and we look forward to putting our best foot forward in the Championship game this Saturday. Go Stags!

DeMatha Pulls Off Dramatic Comeback Win Over Gonzaga In WCAC Semifinals

Screen shot 2014-11-17 at 11.40.04 AMThat was one for the ages! DeMatha started slow Sunday against Gonzaga, but showing the heart of a champion, the Stags rallied in the second half to a 21-14 win over the Eagles.

A great punt return by Darryl Turner Jr. went 54 yards for a touchdown gave DeMatha an early 7-0 lead. But then it looked like Gonzaga’s offense might run away with the game, as they scored twice on big plays, and the Eagles jumped out to a 14-7 lead.

Screen shot 2014-11-17 at 11.41.12 AMWhen DeMatha coach Elijah Brooks got his team in the locker room at halftime, he told them what they already knew: You can come back and beat this team. You’ve done it before, now go do it again.

The Stags took Brooks’ message to heart. Behind a great half from QB Beau English and RB Lorenzo Harrison, DeMatha marched back into the game. English connected with Tino Ellis for a 71-yard touchdown, and Harrison powered in for the game-winning TD. A tremendous defensive play from Ellis sealed the game for DeMatha by breaking up a last-minute Gonzaga comeback attempt.

Screen shot 2014-11-17 at 11.41.26 AMAn impressive team effort for DeMatha leaves the Stags in the WCAC Championship game against Good Counsel. The Falcons rolled to a big win in their semifinal game against McNamara, and will be a stiff challenge for the Stags on Saturday. Expect much more on that game this week, but today, enjoy the Stags comeback win over Gonzaga.

Week 4 Players of the Week: DeMatha 47, ECA 26

After a convincing victory in Baltimore over Eastern Christian Academy, DeMatha head coach Elijah Brooks had a tough time narrowing down his Players of the Week. In fact, in some spots, he couldn’t pick just one guy!

“For the second week in a row our offensive line has paved the way for a 450 yard offensive explosion. They opened running lanes for 3 different running backs to find the end zone and over 150 yards in the air.”
