After such a special 2013 season, the DeMatha football team deserved a special awards banquet. What better way to celebrate the 2013 WCAC Champions than with former Stag running back and two-time NFL Pro Bowler Brian Westbrook as the guest speaker.
Westbrook told the assembled football players and their families how important his high school education was, how he took his years of hard work at DeMatha with him to Villanova and eventually to the NFL. In his nine-year NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, Westbrook amassed more than 10,000 total yards and 71 touchdowns. Impressive. With the senior class DeMatha has set to embark upon college football, Westbrook’s words carry great weight and will prove very valuable.
Head Coach Elijah Brooks also addressed the crowd, and thanked his seniors for all their sweat and hard work over the years. No reward will last like the 2013 WCAC Championship, but hats and t-shirts were available to ensure that nobody forget the incredible season the Stags put together.
At least in some capacity, this will be the last time players like Brock Ruble, Cam Phillips, Taiwan Deal, Chris Jones, JaWhaun Bentley and Deonte Holden will all be together as teammates. Each senior was presented with a football to commemorate their final season as a DeMatha player. It was truly a special night.
