Players of the Week: DeMatha 29, Good Counsel 28 (OT)

Since DeMatha beat Good Counsel last Sunday in the WCAC Semifinals, it’s been a very busy week for the Stags. First Head Coach Elijah Brooks was named WCAC Coach of the Year, then an astonishing 22 DeMatha players received All-WCAC honors.

Screen shot 2013-11-14 at 4.34.52 PMBut before we move on to our WCAC Championship preview on Friday, we wanted to celebrate the players that made the biggest impact in the 29-28 overtime win over Good Counsel. Coach Brooks selected the following players as Players of the Game, and said how important each young man’s performance was.

Offensive Players of the Week: 

Quarterback No. 16 John Lovett — 16-25, 264 yards and 3 TDs Screen shot 2013-11-13 at 9.36.05 AM

Johnny picked a great day to have the best game of his career. He was decisive and confident all game and led our team on big scoring drives.

Wide receiver No. 5 Cameron Phillips — 9 catches, 120 yards and 3 TDs

Screen shot 2013-11-14 at 4.22.17 PMCam is simply a big time player. All year he has been making plays and he didn’t disappoint against Good Counsel.

Chris made the catches that sparked our offensive explosion in the 2nd half. Another senior leader that stepped up when needed.

Defensive Players of the Game:

Senior captain that was everywhere on the field and really delivered a blow on runners all day.

Linebacker No. 54 Dale Matthews Jr. — 12 tackles, 3 tackles for loss

Probably our game MVP. Had a heck of a game on defense but also started at offensive guard. Dale is a phenomenal football player.

Fox might not light up the stat sheet but he’s a major reason our linebackers are able to roam freely. Helped stifle Good Counsel’s rush average to 3.0 yards per carry.

Mac really gave us a lift in the kicking game forcing their offense to start at the 20 and being perfect on point after tries.
